Best ways to save money

I've found that one of the best ways to save money is to make things automatic.

What I mean by this is to have a portion of your paycheck automatically taken out and put into a savings account (and part to a 401k!), or even just a set amount taken each month automatically from your bank account and put into a savings account. Why does this work so well?
